ABOUT

"The Keis (Rabbi)" is a social initiative, which aims to provide educational character traits and values to youth, parents and others. `We strongly believe that by familiarizing ourselves with the values and traditions of Ethiopian Jews, we will be able to eradicate the phenomenon of racism, instill in our society tolerance, and develop a social capacity for acceptance of others and, most importantly, establish a place where everyone can feel safe.
As the prophet says in the book of Isaiah, "Each man will help his brother, and his brother will say ‘Be Strong.’"
Our initiative was born out of a need and desire to instill the values and strengths of the Ethiopian Jew in Israeli society. We would like to assist in the integration of the Ethiopian community in Israeli society by introducing and exposing the greater society to the traditions and culture of the Ethiopian community, and thereby, reducing the phenomenon of racism and discrimination against the Ethiopian community. Our workshops are conveyed using experiential and quality methods, using the five senses: hearing, taste, smell, sight and touch.
The project was established by Rabbi Azaria Patego, a resident of Kiryat Gat, married to Miriam and the father of 8 children. Azaria set up the project out of a sense of commitment and moral obligation to pass down the traditions and culture and to bridge the connection between the Ethiopian community and Israeli society, according to the will of his father – the late Keis Barhanu Patego – who fought from his youth to preserve Jewish traditions and culture in Ethiopia and who was scrupulous in his observance of those traditions.

What are the Goals of the Initiative?

  •  Getting a taste of the values and heritage of the Ethiopian Community in Israeli society.
  • Dealing with the stigmas that have developed surrounding the Ethiopian community in Israel.
  • Enriching the program participants with the values, traditions, and heritage of Ethiopian Jewry.
  • Documenting and preserving the traditions and culture of Ethiopian Jewry.

Meaning of The Name "The Keis"

The Keis – The project is intended to instill knowledge of the traditions of Ethiopian Jewry, wherein the Keis occupied the role of the “Rabbi”, as the spiritual leader and social authority.

An aim of the project is also to convey to the project participants the same feeling that is felt between friends and soldiers in the army. Warrior fraternity and friendship is a deep bond between those who were on the battlefield together, as the saying goes "all for one and one for all." It may seem like just shared experiences but the comradery between warriors is much deeper than that. The loyalty and solidarity required of fighters on the battlefield are the highest that can be seen, from among people who are not family members or spouses. Therefore, in our eyes, the warrior symbolizes the ideal in society – so too, the program emphasizes that the nation of Israel can exist as a nation only when it incorporates all its parts, without regard to differences of appearance and origin.

Throughout the workshop, the messages are conveyed in a way that combines the five senses through an enjoyable, group experience in order to imprint the knowledge and experience in the memory of the participants.
